Austria Student Residence Permit Renewal: Documents, Deadlines and Academic Progress

Austria Student Residence Permit Renewal: Documents, Deadlines and Academic Progress

Receiving your Austrian Residence Permit – Student is not necessarily a one-time process.

For many international students, particularly those enrolled in programmes lasting more than one year, the residence permit needs to be renewed while they are still studying.

And renewal is not automatic.

Austria may check whether you are:

  • Still enrolled at your university
  • Making sufficient academic progress
  • Financially able to support yourself
  • Properly insured
  • Maintaining valid accommodation
  • Continuing to satisfy the conditions of your student residence status

One requirement is particularly important:

academic progress.

For the renewal of a Residence Permit – Student, students generally need to provide evidence of successful study equivalent to at least 16 ECTS credits or eight semester hours per academic year.

So when should you renew, what documents should you prepare, and what happens if you do not have enough credits?

Here is what international students in Austria need to know.

First: Residence Permit Renewal Is Different From University Enrolment

Your university enrolment and your Austrian residence permit are two separate things.

Your university decides whether you can continue studying academically.

The Austrian residence authority decides whether you continue meeting the requirements to legally reside in Austria as a student.

This means:

University enrolment ≠ automatic residence permit renewal

Even if your university allows you to continue for another semester, you still need to renew your residence permit correctly and demonstrate that the relevant residence requirements continue to be met.

How Long Is the Austria Residence Permit – Student Valid?

The Austrian Residence Permit – Student is generally issued for up to 12 months.

An exception exists for certain students covered by EU or multilateral mobility programmes or agreements between higher education institutions, where a permit may be issued for two years.

For a normal two-year Master’s student, therefore, it is common to require a renewal during the programme.

Example:

Master’s programme: 2 years

Initial residence permit: 12 months

Renewal required to continue the second year

Do not assume that your residence permit automatically lasts for the entire duration printed on your university admission letter.

When Can You Apply for Renewal?

Timing is extremely important.

Your renewal application must be submitted before your existing residence permit expires.

You can submit the renewal application at the earliest three months before the expiry date.

For example:

Residence permit expires: 30 September

Earliest renewal application:

30 June

Latest safe legal deadline:

Before the existing permit expires

However, students should not deliberately wait until the final day.

Appointments, missing documents and university certificates can all create delays.

A much safer strategy is to start preparing your documents before the three-month renewal window opens.

Why You Should Check the Expiry Date Now

Do not assume the expiry date is exactly one year after you arrived.

Your permit may have been issued for a shorter period because of factors such as the validity of your passport. Vienna’s official guidance states that where the passport is valid for a shorter period, the student permit can also be limited accordingly.

Take out your residence card and check:

Expiry date: ______

Then set reminders approximately:

4 months before expiry → Start preparing

3 months before expiry → Renewal window opens

This small step can prevent one of the most serious residence mistakes a student can make.

Where Do You Apply for Renewal?

You renew your residence permit through the Austrian residence authority responsible for your place of residence.

Depending on where you live, this may be:

  • District administrative authority
  • Municipal authority
  • Relevant provincial residence authority

If you live in Vienna, renewal applications are handled through MA 35 – Immigration and Citizenship.

Students in other Austrian cities should check the authority responsible for their registered Austrian address.

Do You Have to Apply in Person?

Yes, the renewal application generally needs to be submitted personally.

Vienna explicitly requires students renewing their permit to attend personally and book an appointment with the appropriate MA 35 office.

Because appointment availability can vary, do not leave booking until your permit is close to expiring.

What Documents Are Required for Austria Student Permit Renewal?

The exact documents can depend on your circumstances and residence authority, and authorities may request additional evidence.

However, the core renewal package generally includes the following.

1. Completed Residence Permit Application Form

You need the official application form for the Residence Permit – Student.

Complete it carefully and sign it as required.

Check that information such as your:

  • Name
  • Passport number
  • Austrian address
  • University details

is accurate and consistent with your documents.

2. Valid Passport

Your passport must remain valid.

If your passport is close to expiry, consider renewing it early.

A short passport validity can limit how long your new residence permit is issued for.

Do not wait until your residence renewal appointment to discover that your passport will expire shortly afterward.

3. Recent Passport Photograph

You will generally need a recent biometric/ICAO-compliant passport photograph.

OeAD’s current checklist specifies a colour photograph measuring 3.5 × 4.5 cm and not older than six months for student residence applications.

4. Confirmation of Continuing University Enrolment

For renewal, Austria requires evidence that you are still enrolled.

This is commonly referred to as:

Fortsetzungsbestätigung

or confirmation of continuing enrolment.

OeAD specifically lists this among the documents required for a student residence permit renewal.

Download or request the latest version from your university.

Do not submit an old enrolment certificate from the previous semester if an updated one is available.

5. Current Record of Studies

You may also need your:

Studienbuchblatt

or current record of studies.

This provides information about your programme and university registration.

OeAD lists both the continuing-enrolment confirmation and the current record of studies as renewal requirements.

6. Proof of Academic Progress

This is the requirement students need to pay particular attention to.

For a normal renewal after the first year, the student generally needs to demonstrate successful study equivalent to:

16 ECTS credits per academic year

or:

8 semester hours per academic year.

For most modern programmes using ECTS, students will focus on the 16 ECTS requirement.

What Does the 16 ECTS Rule Actually Mean?

Imagine your previous academic year looked like this:

Student A

Passed modules:

30 ECTS + 24 ECTS

Total:

54 ECTS

Academic-progress requirement:

Met

Student B

Passed modules:

12 ECTS + 6 ECTS

Total:

18 ECTS

Academic-progress requirement:

Potentially met

Student C

Passed modules:

6 ECTS + 6 ECTS

Total:

12 ECTS

This may create a problem because the student is below the normal 16 ECTS proof-of-success threshold.

The residence authority is interested in successfully completed academic work, not simply the number of courses you attended.

Does 16 ECTS Mean You Only Need to Study 16 Credits Per Year?

No.

This is an important distinction.

The 16 ECTS requirement is a residence-permit renewal threshold for demonstrating academic success.

It should not be treated as your recommended university workload.

Your degree may require substantially more credits each academic year to graduate on schedule, and your university may have its own separate progression rules.

So:

Residence requirement

and

degree completion requirement

are not the same thing.

A student can potentially satisfy the residence threshold while still falling behind academically.

What Documents Prove Your ECTS?

Your university can generally provide academic records showing:

  • Modules completed
  • Examination results
  • ECTS earned
  • Academic year

Depending on your university, documents may be called:

  • Transcript of Records
  • Studienerfolgsnachweis
  • Examination record
  • Academic transcript

Vienna’s MA 35 identifies completion of at least 16 ECTS or eight semester hours during the previous academic year as an example of proof of academic success.

Make sure your transcript clearly shows the credits that were successfully completed.

What If You Failed One Subject?

Failing one examination does not automatically mean your residence permit will not be renewed.

The more important question is:

How much successful academic progress did you make overall?

For example:

You attempted:

30 ECTS

Passed:

24 ECTS

Failed:

6 ECTS

You still have 24 successfully completed ECTS.

That is above the normal 16 ECTS residence-renewal requirement.

So one failed module by itself is very different from completing almost no successful coursework during the year.

What If You Have Less Than 16 ECTS?

This is more serious, but it does not necessarily mean renewal is impossible in every case.

OeAD states that a residence permit may still potentially be renewed where insufficient academic progress results from inevitable and unpredictable circumstances outside the student’s control, with illness given as an example.

Examples that might require consideration could include serious circumstances that genuinely prevented normal study progress.

However, this is not an automatic exemption.

If you are relying on exceptional circumstances, you should be prepared to provide appropriate evidence.

Depending on the situation, this might include:

  • Medical documentation
  • University confirmation
  • Other official evidence

The residence authority ultimately evaluates whether the circumstances satisfy the legal requirements.

“I Was Working” Is Not the Same as an Unavoidable Circumstance

International students should be careful here.

If you voluntarily worked many hours and therefore failed to complete enough university work, that does not automatically place you within an exception intended for unavoidable and unpredictable circumstances.

Your Austrian student residence status exists primarily for the purpose of study.

So organise employment around your academic responsibilities rather than allowing work to prevent sufficient study progress.

What About PhD Students?

Doctoral and PhD studies do not always produce ECTS in the same way as taught Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes.

OeAD therefore allows doctoral/PhD students to provide confirmation of academic progress from their academic supervisor where appropriate.

This might demonstrate progress in areas such as:

  • Research
  • Dissertation development
  • Academic milestones

PhD students should ask their university or supervisor early which confirmation will be required.

7. Proof of Sufficient Financial Means

Financial requirements do not disappear after your first residence permit.

You normally need to demonstrate again that you can support yourself in Austria.

For 2026, OeAD’s student-specific guidance lists the following monthly amounts:

  • Students under 24: €722.58 per month
  • Students aged 24 or above: €1,308.39 per month
  • Couples: €2,064.12 per month combined
  • Each child: an additional €201.88 per month

The required funds generally need to be demonstrated for 12 months in advance.

These amounts can change, so students renewing in a later year should always check the current figure rather than relying on an older blog or previous application.

Your Accommodation Cost Can Increase the Required Funds

The financial calculation also considers accommodation costs.

For 2026, OeAD states that where accommodation costs exceed €386.43 per month, additional funds need to be demonstrated. Students also need sufficient resources to cover the necessary health insurance.

This is why two students of the same age may not necessarily need to demonstrate exactly the same overall amount.

For example:

Student A

Rent: €350/month

Student B

Rent: €700/month

Student B may need to demonstrate additional financial resources because of the higher accommodation cost.

What Can Be Used as Proof of Funds?

Depending on the case, evidence can include funds available in an account accessible from Austria.

OeAD also lists possible evidence relating to the source of funds, including:

  • Bank statements
  • Student’s employment income
  • Scholarship confirmation
  • Loan agreement
  • Parent or sponsor support
  • Sponsor bank statements
  • Evidence of sponsor income

The authority may ask you to demonstrate where the money came from.

Avoid unexplained large deposits immediately before your renewal wherever possible.

Keep a clear financial trail.

8. Proof of Accommodation

You generally need evidence of suitable accommodation in Austria.

Examples can include:

  • Rental agreement
  • Student residence contract
  • Accommodation agreement

OeAD’s student guidance requires proof of Austrian accommodation for at least three months in connection with the financial assessment.

If you have recently moved, ensure your rental documents show your current address.

9. Health Insurance Covering All Risks

You must continue to have health insurance valid in Austria and covering all risks required for residence purposes.

For eligible degree students, OeAD identifies Austrian student self-insurance through the Österreichische Gesundheitskasse (ÖGK) as one way to satisfy the requirement.

Do not assume that the travel insurance you used when initially entering Austria remains sufficient for long-term residence.

Check that your current insurance meets residence-permit requirements.

10. Credit Reference Information

OeAD’s current student renewal checklist also lists a recent extract from an officially recognised credit reference agency, with KSV 1870 given as an example.

Vienna’s MA 35 similarly requires a current self-disclosure from the records of a creditor-protection association for renewal applications.

Students in Vienna should pay particular attention to the current MA 35 document instructions before their appointment.

Austria Student Residence Renewal Checklist

A typical preparation folder may therefore contain:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Valid passport
  • Recent biometric photograph
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof of sufficient financial means
  • Evidence of regular expenses
  • Confirmation of continuing university enrolment
  • Current record of studies
  • Transcript/proof showing academic progress
  • Current credit-reference extract where required
  • Additional documents requested for your individual case

Bring originals where the authority requires them.

Vienna’s official guidance asks applicants to bring their documents in original form to the appointment.

What If Your Documents Are Not in German?

Translation requirements can apply.

Vienna states that documents in languages other than German or English require a German translation by an appropriately sworn and court-certified translator. Some foreign documents may also require an apostille or diplomatic legalisation.

OeAD likewise warns that Austrian residence authorities can request German translations and that foreign documents may require legalisation according to the applicable rules.

Start organising these documents early if you know you will need them.

What If You Changed Your Degree Programme?

Changing your programme can make renewal more complicated.

OeAD states that if you change your study programme, the residence authority needs to be informed and the new admission or confirmation should be shown. Evidence of academic progress from the previous programme may still be required when the residence title is renewed.

So this strategy can be risky:

Programme A → little academic progress → change to Programme B → assume old results no longer matter

The residence authority may still examine your previous academic progress.

If you are considering changing courses, understand the residence consequences before completing the switch.

What If You Study Two Programmes at the Same Time?

If you are enrolled in two programmes simultaneously, OeAD states that the required proof of academic success—normally 16 ECTS or eight semester hours per academic year—needs to be demonstrated for the main study programme.

Make sure you know which programme is being treated as your principal course of study for residence purposes.

What Happens If You Apply Before Expiry but the Decision Comes Later?

This is one of the biggest advantages of submitting your renewal correctly and on time.

If you submit the renewal application before your existing residence permit expires, you remain lawfully resident in Austria while the renewal application is being decided, even if the old card expires during processing.

For example:

Residence permit expires: 30 September

Renewal application submitted: 10 August

Old card expires: 30 September

Application still processing in October

You can continue to reside in Austria lawfully while waiting for the decision because your renewal was submitted in time.

Keep the confirmation showing that your application was submitted.

Can You Travel While the Renewal Is Pending?

Be careful.

Your right to remain in Austria while a timely renewal is processing does not automatically mean an expired residence card functions normally for international travel.

If you need to travel abroad after the existing permit has expired and before receiving the renewed card, you may need a special Notvignette, sometimes referred to as an emergency vignette, to facilitate re-entry.

OeAD currently lists the fee for confirmation connected with a timely renewal/emergency vignette as €50 in 2026.

Check with the relevant authority before leaving Austria.

Do not travel assuming your pending application alone will allow you to return.

What Happens If You Apply After Your Permit Expires?

This is one of the biggest mistakes to avoid.

If you submit the application only after your previous residence permit has expired, it can generally be treated as a first-time application rather than a renewal, meaning you may lose the benefit of continuous residence during the procedure.

There is a narrow exception where an unavoidable or unexpected event outside your responsibility prevented timely submission, but specific conditions and deadlines apply.

Do not build your plan around that exception.

Renew on time.

How Much Does Renewal Cost?

For residence permit applications submitted from 1 January 2026, OeAD lists a standard application fee of:

€218.

Vienna’s MA 35 also currently lists €218 for a residence permit application.

Additional costs can arise in some cases, particularly when documents or other procedures are involved.

Fees can change, so always verify the amount before your appointment.

Can Your Renewal Be Refused?

Potential problems can arise if you no longer satisfy the requirements.

Examples include:

  • Insufficient academic progress
  • No continuing university enrolment
  • Insufficient financial means
  • Inadequate health insurance
  • Failure to provide required documents
  • Applying too late
  • Other residence requirements no longer being satisfied

Vienna states that if the requirements for renewal are not met, the applicant receives a negative decision.

Do not wait for a refusal before addressing obvious problems.

If your academic progress or financial situation is becoming difficult, start dealing with it months before renewal.

Does One Extra Semester Cause a Problem?

Not automatically.

Many students take longer than the advertised programme duration because of:

  • Resits
  • Thesis work
  • Missing modules
  • Research
  • Internships

The more important issue for residence renewal is whether you continue satisfying the relevant requirements, including ongoing enrolment and academic progress.

So:

Taking longer than two years for a two-year Master’s

does not automatically mean:

Residence permit cannot be renewed

But continued extensions depend on continuing to meet the conditions.

What Happens After Graduation?

If you successfully complete your studies in Austria, there is another option.

Eligible graduates holding a Residence Permit – Student may apply before the permit expires for a one-time extension of up to 12 months for the purpose of looking for work or establishing a business in Austria.

This is different from a normal student renewal.

You need to demonstrate successful completion of the qualifying Austrian study programme.

If you later find qualifying employment, other residence options such as the Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card may become relevant depending on your circumstances.

A Practical Renewal Timeline

Imagine your permit expires on:

30 September 2027

May

Check:

  • Passport validity
  • ECTS completed
  • Financial situation
  • Insurance
  • Accommodation

June

Request updated university documents.

Collect your:

  • Transcript
  • Enrolment confirmation
  • Record of studies

Around 30 June

The three-month renewal window opens.

Check appointment availability immediately.

July–August

Prepare:

  • Financial evidence
  • Accommodation documents
  • Insurance confirmation
  • Credit-reference document where required
  • Passport photograph

Before 30 September

Submit the renewal personally.

Do not let the existing residence permit expire before filing.

This approach gives you time to solve document problems rather than discovering them at the deadline.

7 Common Renewal Mistakes Students Should Avoid

Mistake 1: Checking the Permit Only When It Is About to Expire

Start monitoring the expiry date months earlier.

Mistake 2: Thinking University Enrolment Is Enough

You also need to satisfy immigration requirements.

Mistake 3: Ignoring the 16 ECTS Requirement

Track successfully completed credits throughout the year.

Mistake 4: Assuming Failed Exams Do Not Matter

One failed exam may not be a problem, but too little overall academic success can affect renewal.

Mistake 5: Using Old Financial Requirements

Minimum financial amounts can change.

Check the amount applicable in the year you renew.

Mistake 6: Letting the Permit Expire Before Applying

A late application can be treated as a first-time application and disrupt your continuous residence status.

Mistake 7: Travelling With an Expired Card While Renewal Is Pending

Ask about a Notvignette before leaving Austria if your existing card has expired.

Your Final Renewal Checklist

Before your appointment, confirm:

Is my passport valid?

Is my current residence permit still valid on the application date?

Do I have my current university enrolment confirmation?

Do I have my Studienbuchblatt/current study record?

Can I prove at least 16 ECTS or equivalent academic success where required?

Do I have valid Austrian health insurance?

Can I prove sufficient financial means?

Do I have evidence of accommodation?

Do I have the required credit-reference document?

Are translations or legalisations required for any documents?

Have I checked the requirements of my specific local residence authority?

If you can answer yes to all of these, you are much better prepared for the renewal process.

The Bottom Line

Renewing an Austrian Residence Permit – Student is not simply a matter of asking for another card.

Austria checks whether the conditions that justified your student residence still exist.

For most students, that means demonstrating:

Continuing enrolment + academic progress + sufficient finances + insurance + valid supporting documents

One of the most important academic requirements is proof of successful study equivalent to at least 16 ECTS credits or eight semester hours per academic year.

Your renewal must also be submitted before the current permit expires, with applications possible at the earliest three months before expiry. A timely renewal allows you to remain lawfully in Austria while the decision is pending.

The best strategy is therefore not to start thinking about residence renewal when your card has only a few days left.

Track your credits throughout the year, maintain your financial records and begin preparing several months in advance.
