How European Universities Decide Whether Your Bachelor’s Degree Matches a Master’s Programme

1. Is Your Bachelor’s at the Correct Academic Level?
Before checking individual subjects, the university first needs to establish that you actually hold a qualification comparable to an appropriate Bachelor’s-level degree.
A typical European Bachelor’s degree contains:
180 or 240 ECTS
while a Master’s commonly contains:
90 or 120 ECTS.
For example, TU Wien states that applicants coming from another national or international university generally need:
- A completed Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject or another relevant qualification at the same higher-education level
- Previous studies comprising at least 180 ECTS.
For an Indian applicant, the university may therefore first assess:
Is this qualification genuinely Bachelor’s-level?
before asking:
Does it match our Master’s?
These are separate questions.
Degree Recognition and Subject Eligibility Are Not the Same
Suppose a university confirms:
Your BTech is recognised as a Bachelor’s-level qualification.
That does not automatically mean:
You qualify for every Master’s programme.
Recognition answers:
“What level is this degree?”
